Despite chilly temperatures and intermittent rain, the Bucyrus YMCA held its annual Team and Individual Triathlon on Saturday, May 26th.  This year’s triathlon, which consisted of a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 3.5-mile run, boasted the largest field since the event’s inception in 1992, with over 50 individuals and 7 teams competing.

YMCA Executive Director Matt Bruns stated that he was “very pleased by the level of community support and the increase in participation by Crawford County residents.”  Matt also pointed out that “it’s a neat event that no one else in the area offers.”  Participants came from 3 other states, as well as from all over Ohio.

The overall winner in the Men’s division was Dave Garrett of Parma Heights in a time of 1 hour and 54 seconds; winning the Female division was Heidi Clark of Marion in a time of 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 32 seconds.  In the Teams divisions, Shumacher Express from Fostoria won the Men’s Team, M.E.K. from Bucyrus won the Women’s Team, and the Browns from Bucyrus won the Coed Team.  The top Crawford County finishers were Rob Dolan and Shelli Rittenour.

We would like to thank the Triathlon committee members for helping put the race together:  Shelli Rittenour, Tom Moon, and Liz Dolan.  We would also like to thank those individuals who helped out on the racecourse.  In the pool area were Bill & Judy Arnold, Miyuki Oishi, Lois Vance, Nina Leitzey, Dana Blankenship, and Joni & Avey Jones.  Volunteers out on the bike and run courses were Grant Kleckner, Bill Dartt, Ken Whitt, Bruce Sloan, Ken Kincaid, Judy Osborne, John Hord, Rick Peters, Karen Dolan, Clay Harris, and Andy Motter.  Working the finish line were Justine Bruns and Joe & Ruthann Noblet.  Preparing the refreshments were Carol Holter and Carmen Myers; Judy Arnold, Joni Jones and Arleta Phenecie provided the delicious homemade cookies.  In a rare occurrence, we actually had more volunteers than places to put them—thank-you for your support, Al Wilson and Dick Schmidt.

Thanks also go out to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, the Bucyrus Police Department, and Stofchek Ambulance Service for their support along the course.

We would like to extend a special thank-you to one of the Triathlon’s original founders and an all-around good guy, Steve Lopez.  Although Steve no longer lives in the area, he made the trek down from the Cleveland area just to help us out, and he was an invaluable help at the finish line.

We also need to recognize our sponsors—without their generous support, this event would not be possible:
