Bucyrus
Area YMCA Basketball Rules
**Most
rules will be the same as the OHSAA with the following exceptions:
-
Each team
will have three time outs per game. (one minute in length)
-
All games
will have four 8 minute quarters.
-
The clock
will be stopped at the four minute mark in each quarter to allow for
substitutions. However,
play will continue until the first dead ball occurs.
-
The game
clock will run continuously except:
Bitty………………..clock will run entire game
Midget……………...foul shots
Gra-Y………………foul shots and last 2 minutes of each
game.
****Regulation time will exist for the last ten seconds of each
quarter for all age groups.
-
All players
must participate in at least 2 full quarters.
In addition, all players must also sit one full quarter.
EXCEPTION – When teams have six or less players, the latter
does not apply. Each
player must then sit at least half a quarter.
To enforce this substitution rule, play will be stopped for 30
seconds at each half quarter so coaches can substitute their players.
No subs will be allowed during any other time except for
injuries. It is the
coaches’ responsibility to make sure all substitutions are correctly
reported to the scorers table. Coaches
who repeatedly violate this rule will be reported to the league
supervisor for appropriate action.
-
FOULS:
Bitty…………….No foul
shots are taken. Fouls are
not counted
Midget…………..Only two shot fouls are taken from the furthest yellow
line.
Personal fouls are not counted.
Gra-Y…………...OHSAA rules apply.
Double bonus does apply.
Players are allowed 6
personal fouls.
NOTE:
While attempting a free throw, a player may allow his/her forward
momentum to carry them over the foul line.
This will be allowed if the player releases the ball before his/her
foot crosses the line. The
player must then refrain from attempting to rebound his/her missed shot
until the ball touches the rim. Players
may attempt foul shots from the yellow line closest to the foul line.
-
To
de-emphasize competition, the score will not be kept for the Bitty and
Midget programs. In Gra-Y,
if the score is tied at the end of regulation, there will be a two
minute overtime. Double
over will not be played.
-
All field
goals are worth 2 points in bitty and midget.
Three pointers will be counted in Gra-Y.
-
The over and
back line is the second yellow line from the baseline.
The ten second line is the thick, yellow line in the middle of
the floor. The ten second
line is also the line in which the players are supposed to “drop
back” to when on defense.
-
There is no
back court guarding or pressing behind the over and back line.
Coaches are asked to emphasize this rule to their players.
EXCEPTION – For Gra-Y, teams are permitted to play full
court, man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter only.
However, if a team is leading by ten or more points, they are
prohibited from pressing.
-
All teams
must play man to man defense. Players
may double or triple team an opponent who is inside the free throw
lane(paint) and has possession of the ball.
Players may also help a teammate who has lost his/her opponent.
Once the player has caught up with his/her opponent, they must
either “switch” opponents or return to guarding their original
opponent.
-
If a player
is not guarding his/her opponent according to the rules, a warning
will be given to the coach. If
the same player violates the rule a second time, he/she will be
removed from the game for the remainder of the half quarter.
Teams that continuously violate this rule will be penalized be
awarding the offense one foul shot and possession of the ball.
-
There will be
one minute between quarters and a three minute half time.
-
Five seconds
in the lane for Midget and three seconds in the lane for Gra-Y will be
called.
-
The referee
has control of the game! His
decisions are final. If
there is a disagreement about a rule interpretation (not a judgment
call), the league supervisor can override the referee’s ruling.
If a problem exists with a referee, the coach shall approach
the league supervisor, not the referee!
-
All technical
fouls result in two foul shots. If
a player or coach receives his/her second technical foul in a game the
coach will be asked to leave the gym and the player will be benched
for the remainder of the game. If
a problem arises with a coach or player having difficulty controlling
themselves, both parties will meet with the league supervisor for
further disciplinary action. Coaches
should always be a positive influence.
-
The referee
has the authority to send a player to the bench for a “cooling
off” period if he/she feels the player is being disruptive or
abusive during the game. This
“cooling off” period shall last, at a minimum, the remainder of
that particular half quarter.
-
Spectators
who, in an un-sportsmanlike manner, yell out at the referee, player or
coach, will be asked to leave the gym.
The league supervisor will enforce this.
-
All coaches
shall report to the league supervisor if a certain player has either
quit the team or has not been showing up for games or practices.
-
Ball will be
in bounded at the half court after substitutions and to begin a new
quarter.
-
When players
match up to begin game/quarter, coaches should match up kids with
comparable talent level.
-
Everyone,
including the coaches, players, officials, and parents should always
remember why we are here – for the kids!
The YMCA youth sports philosophy is fun, fitness, and maximum
participation for all. Kids
and coaches want to win, that is fine.
Please remember our YMCA philosophy in trying to attain this
goal. Kids will miss
shots, referees will miss calls, and coaches will make mistakes.
The bottom line is that if kids have fun while participating at
the YMCA, they will more than likely continue to play at the next
level (Jr. High). If
everyone keeps this philosophy in perspective, we will undoubtedly
have a successful season. Good
luck and enjoy!
